At today’s PlayStation Meeting 2011 event in Tokyo, the big announcement was obviously the reveal of the Next Generation Portable device. But that’s not all that Sony had up their sleeve. Addressing the ever-growing market for mobile gaming, they have also announced PlayStation Suite, a new development framework for mobile games. Kaz Hirai referred to it as a “cross-platform endeavor” attempting to expand the boundaries of the PlayStation brand to mobile devices outside of Sony’s dedicated gaming handhelds.
Few details regarding PS Suite were revealed at the event. Kaz Hirai has stated that the target platform for Suite is Android — which should be a given considering the Xperia Play phone that has been making the rounds from one Chinese factory worker to the next — running on “PlayStation Certified” devices. But it’s worth noting that they have not explicitly ruled out iOS as a place where we may be seeing PlayStation software popping up. Original PSOne games will able to run on Suite, and software developed specifically with PS Suite will run on the Next Generation Portable.
I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about what PS Suite has to offer in the lead-up to the Xperia Play launch. What are you hoping for when it comes to Sony reaching into your phone?
