SNK suggests ‘both sides’ have interest in an SNK vs. Capcom revival

Note: SvC is NOT CvS

SNK producer Yauyuki Oda, who is responsible for some of the developer’s solid modern fighting games, has suggested that both SNK and Capcom are interested in the possibility of reviving the SNK vs. Capcom (SvC) series — a crossover franchise that has remained dormant since the 2006 Card Fighters Clash series.

Speaking in an interview with VGC, Oda spoke of the recent art collaboration that took place at fighting game tournament EVO earlier this month, which saw characters from SNK and Capcom’s respective fighting game series squaring off for the first time in many years. Pressed for the possibility of a revival of the crossover series, Oda reacted with positivity, noting that Capcom itself has some interest in the possibility.

“Definitely in the future, that’s something that I think everybody on all sides, in both parties, are interested in making a reality,” noted Oda. “Especially after we saw the reaction to the [Evo artwork]. It helped us reconfirm that that is probably one of the most wanted things from the fighting game community across the entire world. […] We haven’t actually done anything with Capcom, even on character collaboration stuff. So that poster was the first step towards maybe something like that happening in the future.”

Now, while I am understandably frothing at the concept of such a comeback, there are two distinct points to be made. Firstly SvC is not the same as CvS. So Oda is not talking about the possibility of Capcom vs. SNK 3, and is likely referencing a potential crossover title produced by SNK itself. Secondly, at no point are we distinctly referencing “a new fighting game.” And, given SNK’s penchant for side activities, we should hold off on our fervor a little, lest we find ourselves looking down the barrel of a mobile RPG… or a new range of pachinko machines.

Still, on the positive side, I’d definitely be up for an SvC: Chaos 2. While I admit it didn’t have nearly the hold on me that the legendary Capcom vs. SNK 2 had on… well… almost every fighting game fan in existence, the possibility of seeing Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Fatal Fury, and Samurai Shodown characters locking horns once again is very exciting.

Time will tell, but I’m certainly not holding my breath.

Until such a time, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash is available to download on Nintendo Switch.
