Ski Rodeo VR may have you screaming for your life

RIP Sonny Bono (too soon?)

Rarely do I get to publish a real person's shrieks of death, so I'm morbidly enjoying this.

This is Ski Rodeo, a Bandai Namco VR ski simulator powered by HTC Vive. The experience is unique in that it listens to your breathing (and draws your breathy mist) while tracking your head and jiggle movement without perceptible lag. Like existing skiing games, it's housed on traditional motors with pistons that emulate the rough mountain terrain, so it's an improvement on old-hat arcade tricks.

The combination makes for such effective simulation of actual skiing that we watched it scare people shitless when they crashed into trees and boulders or miss a cliff jump, as you can see in this video.

As they say in California, this is #hella fun.

The tech demo is not a commercial game yet, but is available for previewed until October at "VR Zone: Project i Can" in Odaiba's Diver City Tokyo Plaza, where we also played the skyscraper cat rescue game.

[Special thanks to Yuki Nakae of Toho Entertainment for letting us film her freak-out session.]
