Shoot the dog! A fan remade the original Duck Hunt in virtual reality

Fowl successor

Imagine playing the original Duck Hunt, but this time the ducks can zip to the left and far right of you and escape into the bushes behind! Some random guy just built that. You can play it today.

Sooner or later Nintendo is going to give us a very good reason to buy all of the games we already own on a new console, possibly a VR-powered one. Until then, there's Remko van Brakel. Using what appears to be the same sprites from the original game, Brakel's fun Vive-powered demo puts two orange NES Zappers in your hands with your helpful/hater dog.

At the moment, it has the aesthetic of an 8-bit Paper Mario and the game is currently very limited, but it's a fun five minutes down memory lane at no cost whatsoever. There's even Super Mario Bros. coin blocks, bricks, pipes, and classic piranha plants nestled in the far scenery. It's all very alpha grade but it's already pretty cute. It reminds me of that other fan project we covered that turns every single NES game into 3D via emulation.

Where do we go from here? I want the ducks to fly closer to my face. I want to duck ducks. I want to be able to click on the dog with the trigger and throw him into the field and put 24 rounds of laughter into him. Fuck that dog.

The game works on the Vive, but of course there's ways to emulate the Vive if you don't have one. I recommend Riftcat.com with a cardboard viewer to demo these things on the smartphone you already own. If you don't have bluetooth controllers either, you should stop buying Pokémon buttplugs and get a proper nest of just-in-case cables. I wrote a guide on how to use a $30 Leap controller in VR to emulate Vive's motion controllers.

Is this legal? I'm sure it's his own custom code but as for those assets ... um ... eh ... well ... just download it now before Koopa's lawyers send duder what my 5th grade teacher called a "Happy Gram." This is going to end up Flappy Bird copyright poop
