Here’s a shocker: people like Resident Evil. According to Capcom global sales data — recently compiled beautifully by Kotaku — the Resident Evil series has outsold the Mega Man series by around 12 million units. While RE has reached a certain pop culture status, it’s important to remember that Mega Man has had (roughly) a staggering 124 individual releases on numerous platforms over the years. RE has had 56. (Whoa.)

Below is a snippet of Kotaku’s table with all Capcom series sales data through the 2009 fiscal year. The first number is the amount of games sold. The numbers in parentheses are the total amounts of individual releases according to Capcom (which counts ports to other platforms as well):

  • Resident Evil – 40 million (56)
  • Mega Man – 28 million (124)
  • Street Fighter – 27 million (62)
  • Devil May Cry – 10 million (11)
  • Monster Hunter – 8.5 million (11)
  • Onimusha – 7.8 million (12)
  • Dino Crisis – 4.4 million (13)

Just so you know, Dino Crisis beat out Final Fight, Ace Attorney and Breath of Fire. Discuss this travesty.
