Resident Evil 5 was met with a mixed reaction from fans when it launched last year, not least for the fact that following up Shinji Mikami’s Resident Evil 4 was always going to be a difficult task. That difficulty was certainly felt by director Jun Takeuchi, who has revealed he won’t be returning to the franchise anytime soon.
“Yes, it’s true we did feel extreme pressure — and Mikami-san’s shadow — after Resi 4,” confesses Takeuchi. “However, because we were creating the sequel to this huge franchise we wanted to make our fresh direction clear.
“Personally, I don’t think I’m gonna deal with Resident Evil 6 at all — as far as the series is concerned I’m not planning to return until at least two more Olympics have passed!”
Given the mixed feelings on Resident Evil 5, there are doubtless a few fans who won’t be shedding any tears over Takeuchi’s decision to leave the next game in another’s hands. What do you think? Does Resident Evil need a new captain of the ship, or were you pleased enough with RE5?
