Rebellion working on next-gen Shellshock title

Talking to Gamesindustry.biz, UK studio Rebellion’s CEO Jason Kingsley reveals that their next project will be a sequel to Eidos’ Shellshock.

“It’s very much a mature product,” says Kingsley of the project, slated for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. “It’s a bit like Jacob’s Ladder or Apocalypse Now in movie terms. It’s troubling — deliberately so — it’s meant to be challenging the nature of war, the horror, and why people do these horrific things to each other.”

He goes on to say that the game is “looking absolutely lovely,” but leaves one important thing out — he doesn’t say which Eidos published Shellshock this new game is the sequel to. It would be easy to jump to the conclusion that this game is the follow-up to the ultra-brutal 2004 Guerilla Games developed title Shellshock: NAM ’67, also published by Eidos.

But here’s the monkey wrench: In 1998, Eidos published the Core Design developed tank-action game, Shellshock. It was a pretty terrible and forgettable game, complete with a cringe-worthy hip-hop soundtrack. In 2006, Rebellion purchased the staff and assets of Core Design. In 2007, Kingsley says “Next year we’ll have our first next-gen project out — Shellshock 2 with Eidos,” and everyone assumes it’s the sequel to the 2004 Vietnam-based title.

So which is it? We’re contacting Rebellion to get clarification. Don’t fall off of your seat — we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
