Puzzler proposals and DS wedding cakes

Recommended Videos

A man who hacked into Bejeweled so it would propose to his girlfriend has married with the help of a donation from PopCap games and a Nintendo DS wedding cake. Tammy Li’s Nintendo DS version of Bejeweled was hacked into by Bernie Peng so that a pink sapphire ring would descend when she achieved a certain score.

The inventive move paid off, as Peng and Li have tied the knot, and a Nintendo DS-shaped wedding cake was even made in honor of the proposal. To add to the geeky festivities, table decorations were shaped to evoke videogame graphics and guests were each given a copy of the game that sparked the marriage.

The story of the programmed proposal became a huge Internet story and even made Canadian television. Rather than be upset by the hacking shenanigans, game creator PopCap was thrilled by the story and helped out with the wedding, donating $1,000 toward the decorations and giving away $5,000 worth of Bejeweled 2 Deluxe copies.

So, a happy and endearing nerdy love story. Kind of makes you want to throw up, really.
