The PS3 is a gaming device, a Blu-ray player, a supercomputer … and now a cinema projector? That’s right, a number of PlayStation 3 systems have been spotted playing movies in Japanese cinemas, taking the place of traditional projectors.
The first story came from a 2ch member who was watching Kara no Kyoukai at his local movie theater, when the film was interrupted by a low-battery controller warning that flashed onscreen. As news of this occurence spread (and people tried to decide whether or not this was brilliant advertising), it was discovered that a number of theaters were using the same method.
Despite what some people believe, the Japanese cinemas aren’t using Blu-ray. Instead, they are storing HD video on the hard-drive of the PS3, creating an experience indistinguishable from more common projection methods.
Oh PS3, is there anything you can’t do?
