PS VR is going to make a profit at launch for Sony

Not selling at loss to recoup in software

Back in November, Sony Worldwide President Shujei Yoshida told the world he was "not looking to make a profit" on PlayStation VR units sold at launch. Many took this to mean the hardware would sell at a loss, in order to recoup costs in software sales.

According to Sony Developer Relations Executive Adam Boyes at last night's PS VR price reveal event, when PS VR launches in October 2016 it will in fact sell for a profit.

In an interview with Game Informer, Boyes said the following:

"Obviously we need to make money on the unit, but we've been in the consumer electronics business for a long time, so our ability to source great, high quality parts is a big part of it.  Every device we've sold since PlayStation 4 has been in the black."

So, there you have it, Sony found a way to make VR profitable to sell at a considerably lower price than Oculus, which sells at a loss for its manufacturers.
