Pikachu and pals push past Warcraft

As reported by Yahoo News and GamesIndustry.biz, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is now the highest-grossing video game movie of all-time, with the Warner Bros. release having received its final burst of activity in a few smaller markets, where the movie is still being shown theatrically.

The CGI/live-action comedy reached a global total of U.S. $436 million last weekend. This figure just pushes Detective Pikachu past the $433 million box office made by 2016's fantasy adventure Warcraft, which was made for Blizzard Entertainment by Legendary Pictures.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu stars Justice Smith as a young man attempting to track down his missing father, who teams up with our deductive fuzzy friend (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), who is sleuthing his way through Ryme City. Critics and fans were generally very positive, with the consensus being that although the film doesn't push the boundaries of your typical comic adventure narratively, it does feature good humour, delightful characters, and high-quality CGI work.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu comes to Blu-ray and DVD September 16. You can find out what our own CJ Andriessen and Dan Roemer thought of the movie in this episode of Podtoid (contains major spoilers.)
