Overwatch leads Activision Blizzard to a record-breaking second quarter

It tops 15 million players

Overwatch has added quite the exclamation point to Activision Blizzard's financial statement. The publisher just released its most recent investors' report, and the success of Blizzard's multiplayer shooter has led to record revenues for Activision in the second quarter.

According to the report, Activision's revenue for the quarter ending on June 30, 2016 was $1.57 billion. Compared to last year, that's an increase of 50 percent. Activision's digital revenues were also record-setting, as the company brought in more than $1.14 billion.

The report contains the following quote from CEO Bobby Kotick: "With Overwatch's incredibly successful launch, Call of Duty's record first half performance, and Candy Crush's continued growth as key drivers of our overall performance, we delivered a record [second quarter]. We exceeded our non-GAAP (as previously defined) outlook by $234 million in revenues and $0.16 in earnings per share, and raised our full-year outlook."

Activision also cites "deep engagement" with players as a main contributing factor in this short-term success. Overwatch has topped 15 million players (that's not necessarily units sold), and they've logged more than 500 million hours playing. Cumulatively, people have spent more than 10 billion hours playing Activision Blizzard games during quarter two. That includes the likes of Overwatch, Call of Duty, Destiny, and Candy Crush.

The conference call where Activision will outline and discuss these figures is taking place right now. We'll be here to cover any other news that might come out of it.
