OtherOS running again on hacked PS3 firmware

As promised just over a week ago, iPhone jailbreaker George Hotz has created a means by which OtherOS support can be restored to PlayStation 3 systems. The video above, made by the hacker, shows the previously removed feature running on the firmware version 3.21 which marked the end of Sony’s support for it.

The hack that Hotz refers to as “custom firmware,” can be installed without breaking open the PS3. He expressed that it may even add the functionality on PS3 Slim units that have never had it before. Until his hack is released, Hotz is encouraging users who want to use OtherOS to wait and play online using a proxy until it’s ready.

Sony caused a small outrage in March when they announced the removal of OtherOS, a feature which allowed users to run their own operating system — such as Linux — on the gaming console.
