Only one Xbox 360 game gets into Japan’s top 100, DS gets 47

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has released a load of dirty sales data from the Land of Pixelated Porn, revealing the top 100 selling games of 2008. These games have been broken down by platform, because console wars are fun.

It would surprise nobody that the Nintendo DS cleaned up, with 47 of Japan’s top selling games appearing on the massively successful handheld. Shamefully, the Xbox 360 only managed to sneak one game into the top 100, coming in at number 82 with Tales of Vesperia. This proves that you can be successful in Japan, provided you sell them the same thing they’ve been playing for over a decade.

Here’s the full breakdown:

DS: 47 games
Wii: 15 games
PSP: 15 games
PS2: 12 games
PS3: 10 games
Xbox 360: 1 game

In another turn of events that aren’t shocking, Nintendo was Japan’s most successful publisher. 29 of the top sellers were put out by the Big N, followed by Namco Bandai’s 20. I can’t tell you what the top 100 games were, because I am too lazy to learn Japanese. However, using my acute “recognizing the little English bits” skills, I can tell you the that Capcom’s Monster Hunter: 2nd G was the best selling game.

Here’s the platform breakdown anyway, for those who care:

Nintendo: 29 games
Namco Bandai: 20 games
Square Enix: 11 games
Konami: 10 games
Capcom: 6 games
Level5: 4 games
Sony Computer Entertainment: 3 games
The Pokémon Company: 3 games
Koei: 2 games
Atlus: 2 games
Enterbrain: 1 game
IE Institute: 1 game
Hudson: 1 game
Rocket: 1 game
EA: 1 game
Marvelous: 1 game
