NIS America admits it has no idea when Ys VIII will launch on PC

It was big news last year when it was announced NIS America had snatched away the Ys franchise from Xseed Games and would publish Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA in the west. Unfortunately, things haven't gone exactly as expected. While the PS4 and Vita versions released without issue -- barring player complaints about a less than ideal translation -- it's the PC port that has been giving the publisher the most problems.

It was delayed in September, then October, and again in November. Just over a week ago we were told it would release at the end of the month. Now, NIS is admitting it has no idea when this game is going to come out.

The publisher made the announcement on the game's Steam news page, writing in part:

Low framerate issues and memory leak problems were apparent from the earliest PC builds we received. To help combat these, we looked into the drawing processes, which lead to an overall improvement in performance. However, we are still encountering framerate drops in specific circumstances. The systems regulating these framerate issues are heavily reliant on the architecture of the original PlayStation 4 version and, as such, are not existent in PC architecture. The memory leak issues are somewhat less complicated and expected to be resolved this weekend. But in order to solve these issues, we have determined that we must modify the core level of data in the game.

Yikes, that sounds like work. If you have pre-ordered the game on Steam and want your money back, click here for instructions on how to do so.

PS4 and Vita owners of the game, fret not, as the relocalization patch will still launch on January 30. But if you're waiting to play this on your PC, well, may I suggest passing the time with one of the 10 million battle royale games on Steam?
