Nintendo says it will not release subscriber data for Switch Online as it looks to expand the service

'Our focus at this point is on boosting the appeal of the service'

We know that Nintendo is happy with the Switch Online service at the moment, but just how happy? Well, similar to how Microsoft doesn't disclose Xbox One hardware sales, we probably aren't going to find out anytime soon.

Speaking in a financial Q&A session after being asked about Switch Online specifics, current Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa outright stated that they have "no plans to disclose any current subscriber ratios or number of subscribers at this time." Instead, Furukawa says that the company is going to further the service with "more games, features and fun."

A vague statement sure, but they're already following up on the former bit with an expanding NES suite catalog as time goes on. Again, they waited months after the announcement to tell people that they would be offering official ROM hacks on the service, which was a big mistake. Furukawa notes that they aren't at peak numbers as there is room to grow and that the time it'll take to get there is "measured in years." He also muses that they may extend further physical purchase options for subscribers not unlike the exclusive remotes they already revealed.

As a reminder, Nintendo said last week that "50%" of Switch Online users ordered the 12-month plan or more.
