New homebrew hack makes Wii region-free

Recommended Videos

I’m an avid game importer, but I’ve never imported a Wii game. I almost picked up the Wii Freeloader disc, but I was kind of discouraged when I heard that Nintendo’s newest doesn’t work with it. I don’t think we’re to the point yet where it’s worth importing a Japanese Wii, so it would be nice if there was some kind of free hack that would allow region-free gaming.

According to Engadget, there is one now. Homebrewers TehSkeen have created a non-mod solution enabling region-free gaming on the Wii. This software hack is kind of like a Freeloader solution without the Freeloader disc, though you’ll need a copy of Twilight Princess to get this to work.

Gecko Region Free only requires you to load a file called boot.elf from the chain loader, stick in your Wii game and hit reset.

Of course, Nintendo could easily “patch over” this in the future, but for now, this hack gets you free access to games from all regions. Nice job!
