New Backbreaker trailer brings the pain

Details on NaturalMotion’s Backbreaker have been scarce since I played the game back at E3, but once the game found a publisher in 505 Games last month, I figured we’d be seeing something new relatively soon. Well, I suppose this trailer is technically something we haven’t seen before, but really, it’s just more of the same (admittedly kick-ass) footage — that is, in-game video, but not straight-up gameplay.

Still, the trailer does a good job of showcasing the main selling points of Backbreaker: the low-on-the-field camera, the physics-based bone-crunching hits, and the striking visual style. When I spoke with NaturalMotion’s Rob Donald at E3, he explained that Backbreaker isn’t intended as a competitor to Madden, but as an alternative — a game without NFL teams and players can’t compete with Madden for authenticity, so NaturalMotion is bringing gamers a unique experience that they can’t get elsewhere.

Backbreaker is one of my most anticipated PS3 games of 2010; it’s due out this spring for the PS3 and 360. If you can’t wait until then to get your hard-hitting football fix, there’s a highly regarded Backbreaker iPhone app you can buy right now for 99 cents (and a “lite” version is available to try for free).
