Mortal Kombat 11 for Switch being developed by Shiver Entertainment

SCRIBBLE HIM!

According to Mortal Kombat 11 producer Trevor Traub, the Nintendo Switch edition of NetherRealm's upcoming gore-fest will not be strictly developed in-house. This Switch port will be handled by Shiver Entertainment instead.

In an interview with GameRevolution, Traub revealed the news that Shiver are producing MK 11 at the same time as NetherRealm work on the other console editions, "So it's sort of a co-development", he explained. Traub was asked about the Switch edition being a downgrade, to which he replied that "Special geometry reductions" were being implemented to ensure a smooth experience for Nintendo's MK fanbase.

Shiver Entertainment are another Warner Bros.-owned studio, best known for their work on the Scribblenauts titles, such as Scribblenauts Showdown, which released in March of 2018. How the studio handles the might of Mortal Kombat remains to be seen, but I at least appreciate the honesty about the downgrade, given High Voltage's less-than-stellar PC ports of Mortal Kombat X and Injustice, the former of which essentially killed the PC MK community out of the gate, leading to an almost complete abandonment of the platform later down the line.

Still, it is unfair to dwell on that. This is a different title, a different era and a different studio. Hopefully Shiver will deliver an excellent port for the Nintendo Switch community. Elsewhere in the interview, Traub confirmed that the character's "Augmentation Slots" are used to attach stat-boosting gear (ala Injustice 2) but that there would also be a way to keep the playing field even, which is obviously essential for the competitive scene.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches on PS4, PC and Xbox One April 23. Current rumours suggest the Nintendo Switch port will launch in early May.
