Microsoft is working on Windows 10 VR headsets that start at $299

Releasing next year through PC maker partnerships

During a Windows 10 event today, Microsoft shared a glimpse of and spoke briefly about its upcoming range of virtual reality headsets, which will come about through partners like HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer. They're said to "start at $299" and use inside-out, six-degrees-of-freedom sensors, meaning you wouldn't need to rely on external devices like cameras to track your movement.

Microsoft intends for these headsets to "work with affordable laptops and PCs" and not require "a separate room and complicated setup," something other VR makers like Oculus are also prioritizing as we move into 2017 and beyond. Looking ahead, the company still has HoloLens, its distinctive "mixed reality" headset, to think about. I'll be curious to hear when that'll go consumer-grade.

No word on an Xbox One-ready VR headset yet, but that seems inevitable with Scorpio looming.
