Konami has been caught with their pants down again. Earlier, their servers konked out after being dogpiled by users trying to register for the Metal Gear Online beta. Now it seems that heavy traffic has also botched the launch of the public beta test.

From the MGO Web page:

We would like to thank all players for their keen interest in taking part in the beta test. However, we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused.

What’s worse is that the launch date is TBD. Konami promises to make another announcement tomorrow, at 11:00pm PDT. The good news is that the beta has been extended five more days as a result of this delay.

Sorry. I hate to be the one that screws up your evening. Be back here tomorrow night, as we’ll post the relaunch information (hopefully) as soon as we get it.

[Update: The Konami page has just been updated, and a planned launch time of 04/25/2008 24:00 (PDT) has been given. And now, to cover their asses, they add that “while the start is planned for the weekend, it may change due to unforseen circumstances.” — Thanks, Pedro]
