We are just half a month away from the launch of the next title in the cult anime fighting game series Melty Blood. Melty Blood: Type Lumina, which hits PC and consoles on September 30, will see the franchise’s distinctive, fast-paced gameplay return for yet another bout of magic, melodrama, and mayhem.

Developer French Bread has dropped a brand new video, showcasing a schoolyard scrap between magical gals Akiha Tohno and Arcueid Brunestud. Once we “Open our Magic Circuit”, the two students lay into each other with dynamic rush attacks, air burst combos, and incredible agility, all while CONSTANTLY shouting at each other. For newcomers to the franchise, it’s understandable that you might feel overwhelmed by the pace of the brawl but Project Lumina hope to pull in new players with this latest entry, offering stripped-down gameplay and auto-combo options to help beginners find their feet.

Type Lumina, the eighth mainline release in the fighting franchise, is an adaptation of the visual novel Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, which launched just this past summer. The first entry since 2011’s Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code, Type Lumina is built on an entirely new engine, affording the developer the ability to fully define the prequel’s visuals, tech, mechanics, and gameplay. This new build also accounts for Type Lumina having a much smaller roster than previous Melty Blood releases. One positive effect, however, is that this slighter cast has allowed the team to focus on tighter dramatic interactions and expanded dialogue between the game’s characters.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina launches September 30 on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
