Kojima drops hints at new Snatcher project at Snake vs Zombie event

Ah, the posh lifestyle of a high-profile Japanese game developer. Once you reach a particular echelon of fame and notoriety, you can drop all kinds of obscure hints as to what you may or may not be working on and drive guys like me into a ravenous frenzy. Plus, you get to do it at events called Snake vs Zombie with appropriately-designed and profoundly awesome flyer art.

Snake vs Zombie, hosted by Grasshopper Manufacture in Tokyo, is a series of live talk shows featuring some of the biggest names in Japanese development: Hideo Kojima (MGS), Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil), Suda 51 (Killer7, No More Heroes) and Fumito Ueda (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus). 1UP staffer Yoshi Sato has a great run-down of the event, which I encourage you all to check out here — it’s an awesome look into the minds of some of today’s most active developers.

But Kojima wouldn’t be Kojima if he didn’t drop some sort of esoteric, mind-boggling hint as to his current projects, would he? As the main event of the discussion unfolded, Kojima and Suda51 dropped the following bomb on classic gaming nerds everywhere:

Mikami’s first encounter with Kojima’s work was Metal Gear Solid — however, he personally likes Snatcher more. Kojima and Suda 51 both reacted, “Ah yes, Snatcher,” alluding to something. “Oh, should we announce it here?” “Maybe later, during Hidechan Radio?” (The show later lead to the live recording of Hidechan Radio by Kojima Productions).

Could it be that Kojima is finally planning to revisit one of his most fan-beloved creations (that isn’t MGS) with Suda in tow? Expect to hear an announcement sometime in the very near future. A Snatcher remake or sequel on the Wii would be a realization of my deepest, most hidden dreams.
