First video game to receive literary honor

Supergiant Games’ Hades, not content with already being the sexiest video game in existence, has gone and added yet another gong to its long list of accolades — a prestigious Hugo Award, no less. This marks the first time ever that a video game has received a prize from the judges of the World Science Fiction Society, so it’s understandably a grand gesture.

The Hugo Awards, hosted annually at the World Science Fiction Convention, offers a range of prizes to some of the best literary and science fiction works. The 2021 iteration of the event hosted a category for video games for the first time ever, with Hades beating out fellow nominees The Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Spiritfarer, and Blaseball. One of these titles is doing its own thing.

“Wish I could have attended the Hugo Awards in person,” wrote Supergiant creative director, Greg Kasavin. “I wasn’t able to make an acceptance speech [at the convention] on behalf of the team though did have a few words here. I’m grateful that the awards are recognising work in this category, much less the work we did!” The tweet is accompanied by a short acceptance video.

The World Science Fiction Society is considering making the video game category a permanent fixture going forward.

Released in 2020 on PC and Switch, before coming to other console platforms in 2021, Hades is a slick, stylish, and utterly engaging journey through a world inspired by Greek mythology and brought to life through lurid artwork, brilliant voicework, and compelling gameplay. Since its release, Hades has won a slew of international awards including multiple BAFTAs, a Nebula award, and multiple Game of the Year nominations and wins, including Destructoid’s humble choice. It even got a controller.

And it’s deserving of every last one of the above awards. Hades is, simply put, a fantastic release.
