DeS: Dota 2's challenge tokens are frustrating loyal players

Find $1,200 in your sofa for the new Nvidia Titan X video card

Absurd, and I'd murder your aunt for one

I've seen some ridiculous product launches, but this one takes the cake for 2016. This is the video card equivalent to walking in on your parents having sex. This is the video card equivalent of dropping a scissor in a toilet. This is fisting a snake, vomiting on the pope, and being the host of Dancing With The Stars. You're not supposed to do any of those things. Nerds shouldn't be allowed to create such unholy hardware without being beaten back into their cave by responsible product managers. This is pushing boundaries.

At double the price of their recently announced GTX 1080, the new Titan X is positioned to be a formidable and mother of all marketing/pricing experiments. Just $1199.99999999999! My checking account hurts by just looking at it. They got away with $1000 for last year's model, so what's another $200 bucks for the enthusiast with a hard-on and small hands? Gotta have it.

Here's the specs as per Nvidia's blog:

  • 11 TFLOPS FP32
  • 44 TOPS INT8 (with new deep learning inferencing instruction)
  • 12B transistors
  • 3,584 CUDA cores at 1.53GHz (versus 3,072 cores at 1.08GHz in previous TITAN X)
  • Up to 60% faster performance than previous TITAN X
  • High performance engineering for maximum overclocking
  • 12 GB of GDDR5X memory (480 GB/s)
  • Divorce paper bundle included!

I may have added the last one. That's a lot of RAM and that point is drawing more criticism from the tech crowd than the price. Many of us expected this card to be a candidate for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM/2) instead of DDR5, but it looks like we'll have to wait until 2017 for such a device. It's not like DDR5 is a slouch. (And yes, I know it's "GDDR5", everybody uses the shorthand, don't be that pc master race dork in the comments)

Also, I have to applaud their design team again. The 10 series looks a little less steampunk and more like something out of Area 88.

Looks like a very evil alien space ship. I can dig it.

Performance-wise I haven't found any real-world benchmarks yet, so those will probably start hitting closer to the card's launch date of August 2nd. I've seen a few people around the web in the comments section trying to do the math. People are estimating an everyday 20-45% performance boost from the GTX 1080, depending who you ask. Here's what Gizmodo had to say when compared to the 10 series flagship:

Sat against the the GeForce GTX 1080‘s 2560 CUDA cores, 1607MHz and 1733MHz base and boost clock, and 8GB of 10Gbps GDDR5X memory on a 256-bit interface, the Titan X is rocking 3854 CUDA cores running at a slightly slower 1417MHz and 1531MHz base and boost clock, as well as 12GB of 10Gbps GDDR5X on a 384-bit interface. That means that at 480GB/sec its memory is a full 25 per cent faster than the GTX 1080’s 320GB/sec.

Can you even find a 1080 to buy right now, anyway? Sheesh.

The video card industry is going through a weird time. New cards have been announced by both AMD and Nvidia that are almost impossible to find online and on the shelf, the battle for the $200 sweet spot hasn't been this brutal for a decade, and now this monstrosity. Naturally, resellers roaches are already marking it up pre-orders beyond the $2,000 range.

I'm excited that such a monster exists in the world, but anybody that orders this is either Looney Tunes or has baller money to burn. Shot-callers, good for you. Sane people, save your money. There's much better ways to get similar performance for a lot less: TFLOP per dollar king is still the now-discounted 980 Ti, or any of the new 10 series cards. There's no reason to pre-order this unless you're really into VR.

If you haven't heard, neither Unity or Unreal are taking advantage of SLI at the moment for VR games yet. If you're one of the 1% that has a 4K gaming monitor and your frame rate sucks then this almost sounds reasonable. If you're not convinced that's a big deal you probably have to play some Bullet Train or nothing I can say will change your mind.

Me? I have mixed feelings about it, but I applaud Nvidia for having the balls to execute it. Once again, they've created the ultimate toy. It's supposed to be available on August 2, which by Nvidia speak means you'll never see one in real life until 2026. There's more details on the official site.
