The point-and-click puzzler comes to PC on August 21
Playing through the NES port of Shadowgate is one of my fondest memories of gaming during the late eighties. In fact, Shadowgate was my very first exposure to the point-and-click genre.
Coming from a family of die-hard luddites and technophobes, my access to personal computers was pretty much limited to waiting in line at the public library to play ZORK. So, unfortunately, I had to go without the exotic pleasures of the personal computer and settle for what was available to me on consoles at the time.
When Shadowgate first came to the NES, I really wasn't sure what it was all about, but decided to give it a shot anyway. The game's cover reminded me of Dungeons and Dragons and the Choose Your Own Adventure books I was reading at the time, so I thought this might be something that I would enjoy. I quickly found that I adored this sort of game and spent countless hours working my way through Castle Shadowgate, taking notes and cursing myself as I ran out of torches.
Needless to say, when I first heard about a re-imagining of this classic coming to the PC from Zojoi, I was thrilled. In this latest trailer, the game's developers ask you to ponder your many potential deaths in the perilous Castle Shadowgate. Will it be from loitering? Giant tentacles? Or will you meet your end with the fiery harbinger of doom?
