Exclusive: Brief off-camera video of Argyle Shift

I'm on a date inside Lucifer

Last week, I blogged about the first few minutes of Argyle Shift, a new Japanese arcade shooter by Bandai Namco where you hang out with a gorgeous cyborg in VR while piloting a giant Gundam type robot called Lucifer. The alpha-grade demo ran off a PC, but no platform has officially been announced (to my knowledge). My bet is on PlayStation Neo, as this thing is an Unreal 4 old lady's laptop down-the-stairs pusher.

I'll eventually release the story from Huge Member perkgate, but didn't want to leave everybody else hanging, so here's an unlisted video of what the game looks like. We weren't allowed to film the screen up close, but there's a monitor on the right that gives you an idea what's going on, and how the giant mechanical chair works in tandem with the Vive HMV. It's a very limited demo, but gives us a glimpse of where the arcade cabinet makers may take this VR tide. Forbes also has a brief preview and there's more info on Japanese IGN.

As media, I'm trained to classify this as a shooter, and I feel kinda wrong for doing so. This is the start of a different genre where you just sort of hang out with a virtual person and there's other game window dressing happening around it to fill the gaps. It's a shooter on the side, but it would be a stretch to call it role-playing or a titty-watching dating sim. Kind of like when you go to bar with your best friend to air some laundry: the point isn't to spend the time focusing about how well the cabinets are stocked or if the bartender knew how to make you a lobster milkshake. I agree with Ollie's take; it's a mixed bag.

I'm very interested in how the public and media is going to react to it, should it come state side. I haven't been able to find any other video of this game, but I'm crawling all the Asian gaming sites like a beast until I find someone more flagrant than my assistant. This demo is playable at Diver City Tokyo Plaza until October by appointment only, consumers welcome.
