Whether we’d take a Bullet Bill for Mario or just as soon kick Luigi in the nuts, if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the Friend Codes system that Nintendo has in place for the Wii and DS is stupid. It’s also dumb, it smells funny, and is consistently picked last in gym class.

Damian Zerr, associate producer on the upcoming no-brainer, Madden NFL 2008 on the Nintendo Wii, seems to agree. In a recent interview with IGN, Zerr has confirmed that EA Canada want no part of that Friend Code noise.

“Madden Wii doesn’t support the Wii friends system during online play,” Zerr told IGN, as he put out a lit cigarette on a picture of Kirby. “This is something we’re still working on with Nintendo. For now our online play uses your EA Nation Persona to search and manage your EA Messenger account.”

He also goes on to confirm that while the game won’t be supporting voice chat this year. Note the use of the words “this year,” hinting at the possibility of future Wii titles supporting some form of voice chat. It will have a basic EA Messenger chat service built write in, which is perfect for all of that “A/S/L” that lends itself so well to online sports titles.
