Doom's Achievements look surprisingly not-hellacious

0

Except for that Ultra-Nightmare one

Doom is two days away from releasing, and it seems like we still know suspiciously little about it. Like, Bethesda has shown bits of the campaign and held multiplayer betas. Still, it all feels like one big question mark.

The recently-leaked Achievements don't do a whole lot to clear things up. They're mostly a series of non-specific challenges, and collectibles and upgrades. Some are dedicated to killing certain ways and others -- like IDDQD and IDKFA -- are throwbacks to Dooms of old. For those not-so-keen on multiplayer and SnapMap, it appears as if it'll only take a minor commitment to pick those Achievements up (unless reaching level 5 is a significant accomplishment).

The biggest takeaway might be that Doom mostly isn't looking to punish completionists. There could easily be an Achievement for beating the entire game on Nightmare difficulty, but there isn't. In fact, Doom aficionados would probably expect it. Instead, any difficulty, even the simplest, earns the "Knee-Deep in the Dead" Achievement. However, there is one for completing "The UAC" on the new Ultra-Nightmare permadeath setting; that sticks out like a sore thumb among a list of Achievements that don't look too intimidating.

Here's the full list of Doom's Achievements:

  • E1M1 -- Complete the first mission of the campaign (25G)
  • Knee-Deep in the Dead -- Complete the campaign on "I'm too Young to Die," "Hurt Me Plenty," "Ultra-Violence," or "Nightmare" (100)
  • A Toe into Madness -- Complete "The UAC" on Ultra-Nightmare (10)
  • Up Close and Personal -- Kill 50 enemies using the Chainsaw (25)
  • Specialist -- Earn the Mastery for a weapon mod (20)
  • IDKFA -- Earn the Masteries for all weapon mods (50)
  • Hot Swapper -- Acquire all weapon mods (30)
  • Historian -- Find all Data Logs (25)
  • Timing is Everything -- Use explosive barrels to kill 100 enemies (15)
  • Every Nook and Cranny -- Find all Collectibles (30)
  • Argent Overload -- Fully upgrade Health, Armor, or Ammo capacity (15)
  • Argent Fiend -- Fully upgrade Health, Armor, and Ammo capacity on a single campaign run (30)
  • A Gift from Beyond -- Earn a Rune (15)
  • The Circle is Complete -- Earn all Runes (30)
  • Tinkering -- Fully upgrade a Praetor Suit category (15)
  • Overclocked -- Fully upgrade all Praetor Suit categories on a single campaign run (50)
  • Thorough Shopper -- Complete all Challenges for a single mission (20)
  • Butcher -- Perform 200 Glory Kills (50)
  • Rip and Tear -- Glory Kill all common enemy types in the campaign (20)
  • Juicin' it Up -- Kill 150 enemies while using Power Ups (50)
  • Momentum Shift -- Upgrade a Rune (25)
  • IDDQD -- Upgrade all Runes (100)
  • What Else Ya Got? -- Complete all Mission Challenges on a single campaign run (35)
  • IPXSETUP.EXE -- Win a Multiplayer Match (15)
  • Combat tested, Doomguy approved -- Reach Level 5 in Multiplayer (30)
  • Shareware -- Create and publish a SnapMap (10)
  • No Rest for the Living -- Play 5 published SnapMaps (20)
  • Entryway -- Complete the SnapMap Basic and Advanced Tutorials (20)

The five secret Achievements look to be story beats that are extremely expected from a Doom game. Regardless, avert your eyes if you don't want confirmation of some things that you already know are coming.

  • Shoot it Until it Dies -- Defeat the Cyberdemon (25)
  • Outnumbered? No Problem -- Defeat the Hell Guards (25)
  • Who's Next? -- Defeat the Spider Mastermind (25)
  • Into the Unknown -- Warp to Hell (15)
  • An Old Friend -- Acquire the BFG (30)
