Destructoid Community: How do we feel about 1-click story reactions?

Click the eggplant to express cognitive dissonance

Destructoid's very awesome web comments system, powered by Disqus, is rolling out a beta feature today that enables Facebook-style story reactions. The new widget will live right between the article, sandwiched above the comments... which is weird because you'd think it would appear in the comments. It is not part of the comments system per se, but it shares your existing Disqus profile. I have not enabled this on Destructoid. Not yet, anyway.

You can see what it looks like in action here. I don't want to turn it on and freak everyone out, so this is in part a fair warning and also a call to action: Let's fuck with the labels.

To be fair, I would imagine rolling something out like this would be pretty stressful for Disqus, who has billions of users. These are incredibly safe/boring, but there's some room for customization.  How do we un-Facebook this and make it work in the way Dtoiders communicate?

Here's a screenshot of the admin panel for this feature. Overall, the stock choices seem a little dated.  Hmm....

I like the idea because Destructoid has AAA long-time comment creepers that might want to touch these things.  In addition to comments up-voting, (that part is not changing at all) you can add a gnarly little yellow person to express a quick reaction to a story. One of the avatars reminds me of our community manager's very iconic stoic cat party.

I'd like this to be useful for our creepers that don't comment.  Think of the creepers, people.

The bad news is that, as of this moment, I can't change the emoji, or at least that does not appear to be working this very minute.  There are six we can choose from and there is a 20 character limit, including spaces, for each reaction. It looks like I can't make them too wordy or they'll stack.  We need to find a balance. As a writer I would also be confused if people were reacting negatively to the news or to the quality of my dick jokes. I guess that's confusing on Facebook as well. For example, when you want to convey emotional support with a "Like" about shitty news. We as writers won't really understand what you mean if we're not good about our implementation.

Honestly, I have no idea if this feature is for Dtoid yet, but I hate change less than most people.  For example, If I had to choose between good things happening all the time and interesting things, I'd have to say that I have a profound respect to the man who ate ass to raise the price of Bitcoin.  As for what our staff thinks, we won't use it unless you guys are all {{ Reasonably Excited Off-Brand LEGOs }}.
