Deadly Creatures behind-the-scenes trailer is creepy, crawly, and crazy

Deadly Creatures is a very unique action thriller coming up for the Wii, and THQ recently sent over this three-and-a-half-minute behind-the-scenes trailer for you to check out. I saw an early build of the game back in the beginning of June, and at the time, it was set for release in October. The title has now been pushed back to December, but it still looks to be just as visceral an experience as ever.

The developer, Rainbow Studios, is based in Phoenix — like two of my fellow editors — and they took inspiration for Deadly Creatures from the desert environment around them. Accordingly, the “protagonists” of the game are a tarantula and a scorpion. Where do the last two adjectives in this post’s title come in? Well, the game’s Lead Designer, Jordan Itkowitz, actually has a tarantula and a scorpion crawling on his body and hands, respectively, in the video! The dude’s got balls, I’ll give him that.

As for satisfying the criteria of the first adjective I mentioned in the title, well, the video has these strange cuts that seemingly try to portray the dev team members as scary or badass. It’s a bit … creepy. Anyway, there’s a lot of fascinating stuff about the game in the BTS trailer, including information on the story that we didn’t know until now — such as the main enemies’ identities (George Struggs and Wade) — as well as how Rainbow Studios came up with all those wonderful noises for creature clashes.

For people (like me) who believe this game would be better served on an HD gaming platform, here’s a great line from Senior Game Designer Devin Knudsen: “Being able to use the Wiimote as your stinger, and being able to pull the wings off a creature, just really felt natural for the Wii.” I’m sure that’s just the kind of motion control that Nintendo had in mind when they came up with the Wii.

It might be a Wii exclusive, but Deadly Creatures is nonetheless shaping up to be a one-of-a-kind gaming experience, and I definitely want to give it a shot when it comes out this December. Hit up the game’s official Web site for more details.
