DayZ finally enters beta after a five-year alpha

Still shambling along

DayZ's development has been anything but rushed. The zombie apocalypse survival game first entered Early Access in December 2013. Ever since then, it has been in alpha. Now, nearly five years later, DayZ enters beta on PC.

The important distinction between the two, as developer Bohemia Interactive says, is that DayZ's content and features are mostly finished. Now, Bohemia needs to focus on the finer aspects such as optimization, balancing, and bug-squashing. Bohemia lists some major points of the beta as:

  • Major engine changes
  • Improvements to game and network performance
  • Introduction of base building
  • Massively improved implementation of vehicles
  • More elaborate AI for infected and animals
  • Major map rework to make Chernarus more beautiful and detailed
  • Ability to run your own servers
  • Modding Support

This milestone has been a long time coming. In May 2017, Bohemia first mentioned that the beta was a couple of updates away. As it turns out, that meant another 18 months. At long last, the alpha is finally in the rearview mirror.

While history tells us we shouldn't get our hopes up, Bohemia indicates that DayZ's beta might not be all that protracted. Its 1.0 release is still expected before the end of 2018. Maybe that'll happen or maybe it won't. DayZ moves at its own pace.
