Crytek: 3D will become the standard

While consumer interest is low and some of us wonder why 3D is being treated like a new technology, Crysis 2 developer Crytek remains confident that glasses-reliant entertainment will become the industry standard.

“I’m quite sure over the years it will become standard. 3D entertainment is inevitable. It will come, and the key solution will be if it’s easy for the eyes,” says CEO Cevat Yerli. “We have been working with 3D for a while. We know the nuances and details, and our approach of concave 3D makes the game ultimately very accessible.”

“If it’s a challenge for the eyes, people won’t like it. But we are trying to make a game that is hours of 3D, and you can judge it yourself. You’ve seen how easy it is for the eyes, and for me it’s critical that people understand we are not naïve when it comes to 3D.”

I’m still not sure if this sudden move to embrace 3D is a good thing. It just strikes me as rather childish to see game developers rush all over it and declare it the inevitable future just because 3D gaming is a “new” concept. Over a period of years, sure, I can see it gaining a bit more ground, but companies like Sony and EA would do well to not pin their hopes and dreams on the gimmick.
