Bethesda’s Todd Howard did not rule out the possibility of an Elder Scrolls 5 during his talk at QuakeCon. This runs contrary to our original story — which is totally and utterly wrong — based on notes and written with the anxious haste of a blogger. Blame me for not following up. Blame me for not taking the care to realize I attributed not only false words, but also false words to the wrong man.
“Don’t look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future,” Howard actually said in response to the fan question before stating the franchise would continue. In a recent posting on the Bethesda blog, PR man Pete Hines clarifies that Howard seemed dodgy because he didn’t want to talk specifics.
As for the MMO question Howard fielded with “I guess there’s a chance,” it was a statement made in jest. As Hines clarifies, Howard doesn’t even work for the team that is handling the MMO. It also hasn’t been announced, as we stated previously but reiterate here for clarification purposes.
So, an Elder Scrolls 5 may happen and a ZeniMax Online Studios-created MMO is on the way.
