CES 2009: Destructoid’s impressions and floor video

Recommended Videos

Those that have never been to the Consumer Electronics Show may think it to be an exciting event. It isn’t. And if you’re a gamer, it’s even more of a drag. It’s really just miles and miles of tech that you don’t care to look at. Honestly, it all starts to look the same after awhile. I always run into the devout tech geek that swears that they’d love to attend. But I’ve seen enough of these tech geeks here bail out after two days over the years to know that new attendees would most likely do the same.

The cool stuff we have seen has either been off-site or tucked away in some corner. This year has been particularly sad. I don’t know if it’s the poor US economy or what, but attendance seems down. In past years it was hard to walk anywhere. Now some halls are dead. Booth babes were the first to be cut, unfortunately. And there’s no hot, exciting product for PS3. So it’s just pretentious, balding retail buyers and foreign press, all scrambling to find something interesting to buy or look at.

In one hall yesterday, Nick and I wandered aisle after aisle of empty booths, looking on as people dozed off or yawned constantly. As you’ll see toward the end of the video, we eventually came across an area with plenty of CES attendees. Turns out that they were all watching a football game.

The small gaming showing makes CES still worth coming; there’s always at least one good game to see here And the parties? Fantastic. But this year’s turnout and performance make me wonder how well CES will fare in the future.
