Capcom knows that the West is important

Hi, Japan. We’re the western world. We’re kind of a big deal.

We might not have been able to say that a few years ago and expect them to listen. But Japanese developers and publishers have been realizing that the North American and European markets are the place to be. Capcom is no exception.

Speaking to MCV, recently transplanted executive David Reeves noted exactly how important these markets have become, saying, “88 percent of the games business is in the US and Europe combined, while 12 to 15 percent is in Japan. So the concentration has to be in the West.”

Wow. Even I didn’t realize things had gone that far. Reeves went on to note that much of the success of games coming out of Japan for the west is dependent on quality localization. While I think that’s true, I will say that the one thing which can be better than a great translation is a really bad one. Nothing says funny like Engrish.
