Bungie is overhauling Destiny 2 with a free-to-play scheme, cross-save for all platforms

Revealed during the 'Next Chapter' livestream today

Google already revealed Destiny 2's "Shadowkeep" expansion (and its accompanying season pass, which will follow the same formula as Forsaken and its similar three-part pass), but Bungie took it a step further by announcing some shakeups to the game in this post-Activision partnership world.

Bungie will launch the (standalone) Moon-based Shadowkeep for $35 on September 17, which will mark the beginning of a free-to-play strategy for the rest of the game. This concept (which is popular for the MMO circuit, a term used in the stream) is one of several attempts to give the game away for free, one of which was a big BlizzCon announcement that gifted players the base PC edition of the game for a limited time. Also of note: Bungie is basically confirming support for Destiny 2 for another full year through the summer of 2020 with the pass, so we're not getting Destiny 3 anytime soon.

Both Steam and Stadia will welcome Destiny 2 later this year, with concessions for full free acclimation to Steam for PC players. Oh, and cross-save is coming for all platforms, even PS4: Bungie made sure to emphasize that. Thanks to trailblazers like Fortnite, Dauntless, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this could be more of a thing.

So that's the "new era of Destiny." The base game is free, expansions will cost you (as usual), and there's cross-save (but no cross-play yet). Are you entertained?
