I suck at games: Hey, I tried to like Fallout 1&2.

Fallout 3 is easily one of my favorite RPG's of all time. That's saying something, because I've played plenty of them, both Western and Eastern style. It had a huge, sprawling world with so much stuff to do, I still haven't actually beaten the game yet. I know how it ends, I just haven't gotten there yet. So when I found out my friend owned both Fallout 1 AND 2, I jumped at the opportunity to try them out. Hey, I loved the third game in the series, and with so many fans complaining about how different Fallout 3 looked from the original games, Fallout 1 and 2 must have been amazing, right?

Unfortunately, for me, I found out that all of the fans of the original Fallouts were, in my opinion, absolutely nuts.

So, I got home and installed Fallout. Immediately after a one-sided discussion with the Vault Overseer, I'm sent out of the vault with... absolutely no idea what the hell I was doing. I clicked around trying to figure out where I was going, when suddenly the crap all over the screen changed around. Apparently I was fighting something now.

I walked over to a rat, which was apparently threatening my life, and click on it to attack. Nothing happened. So I double clicked it. Still nothing. After a little fiddling, I realized I was supposed to hit a 'button,' if you could call it that, which would let me use the weapon I had equipped. Which was my fists.

Why not.

So I hit the button. Whoops, I don't have enough action points. Apparently it's impossible to punch something after walking for seven steps. Already, I found the interface clunky, confusing, and slow. But, I plowed my way through that battle, and the following battles, until I left that screen. Now, I was on a map screen, I think, which I had to go through to get to the town to the east. So I went to the east. There, I found my short time limit of 100 days to get whatever I needed to get suddenly go down to 95 days.

I know it's the map from Fallout 2, but it's all I could find.

Well, I guess I don't have any time for exploring the world. I had a lot to do, and no time to do it. I went into town, hoping to move fast, get what I needed, and get out. My character, on the other hand, decided he had plenty of time, and walked at a rather leisurely pace through the town. While I went to get a snack and a soda, my character (who I accidentally named 'Nothing' because the game never tried to make sure I name him, but oh well.) walked over to someone I wanted him to talk to. Now, I saw things through Nothing's eyes, as he spoke to a villager named Tandi.

When you talk to important NPCs in Fallout's 1 & 2, you talk to them in a first person view, with their appearance taking up half the screen, and I was not prepared for this to happen. Jeebus, I almost crapped my pants the first time it happened. Considering that this happens everytime you talk to an important NPC, I'm surprised everyone was complaining about the system for talking to people in Fallout 3. At least in fallout 3 I see their faces before getting a close-up view.

The worst part about this is that the old graphics are just at the spot so that the appearances come right out of the Uncanny Valley, being realistic enough for me to be almost convinced that it's a real person, but with movements that a normal person wouldn't actually perform, leaving me creeped out beyond the initial shock.

Talking with some more villagers (Outside of a first-person view, thankfully.) leads me to the vault I need to get to, which has the water chip necessary to save the vault I'm from.

This thing.

I go their and... Whoops, I need rope. Alright, whatever, I'm getting sick of this. I go buy some rope, return to the vault, and... Oh look, I need more rope. No. I refuse. I don't care how little time I have, I don't think I can deal with going through the main storyline nonstop without seeing something else this game has to offer. I wander through the wasteland, found some scorpions, and promptly got my ass handed to me.

Death is not a hunter unbeknownst to it's prey...

Well, crap. I guess I gotta start from the autosave file... Oh wait, there isn't one. If you die in Fallout without saving for a while, you'll have to start all the way from back when you last saved. Or the beginning the game, in my case. This pissed me off to no end. I'm sorry, but I've become a bit spoiled from the autosave features common in most current games. In fact, Autosaving has been common for quite a while now. It makes saving every ten minutes unnecessary, which is good because of how much of a pain in the ass it is.

The cycle I experienced repeated two or three more times before I gave up on the game. The battling was clunky and slow-paced, the trading and conversation bits were too confusing, and the lack of an autosave feature lead my to restart my game to many times. I'd go on another rant about Fallout 2, but it felt like exactly the same game, except for a minor graphical upgrade

I really wanted to like the first two Fallout games, I really did. But there were so many problems I saw with it, I almost got the feeling that the only reason they were so beloved in many peoples eyes was because they see the old games through rose-tinted glasses. Now that I know what Fallout 3 would have been like, I am thankful the rights to the game were sold to Bethesda. Fallout 3 is, in my opinion, better than it's predecessors in every concievable way. Not to say that I'm glad that Black Isle Studios went out of business, since I did like Baldurs Gate.

I just don't like the original two Fallout games. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

P.S. Sorry about the crappy pictures, I couldn't get Fraps to work on my computer and I had to use Google Images.
