Where Are All the Unique Quality Games At ??

   0

Socrates once said The best sauce for food is hunger and as I look out on the fields of future games, I see my hunger not bested, not satisfied but merely growing. Perhaps because most games on the market and the ones to be, are the same old games we've been playing since the Super Nintendo. Oh sure, they do look lovely with their spectacular graphics but we've now reached a point in our consoles, where the graphic criteria doesn't hold as much weight as it used to. Chalk it up to more power, better game engines almost universally used by all, and better programmers. That and we're not easily bedazzled anymore by them. It's to be expected.

Yet even with all the new tools that developers have at their disposal, it seems to me that nothing new is being created. We still have the same genres of games as before, and we still have the same excess of games in certain particular genres being farmed out. In a perfect world, the type of games that are being developed should be of equal percentile. That of course will not happen as the trend in video games, as in other popular media, is if it's a success, start copying that winning formula. But when is enough..enough? When are we going to get our fill of yet another generic first person shooter? Or yet another high profile game that gets hyped to no end, then gets delayed, then gets pushed into the market with an overwhelming lack of quality and polish.

Doesn't it seem like there's a whole slew of games that are being released that are absolute garbage? Seriously the people that make these games can not be that blind not to know that? I would think that the exuberant amount of investment to create a great and profitable game , would require a quality standard that must be met before shipping it out. One would think that, but the sad truth is that it sure doesn't seem that way. Recent examples of high profile games torn asunder from their perches of hype have been: Lair, Kane and Lynch, Assasin's Creed, and now Army of Two. I'm casting a speculative eye on Haze next.

For every game that is truly a unique quality experience, Bioshock, Portal, Super Mario Galaxy how many sub-par games did you have to wade through? Ask yourself this question, as well: How many games have come out so far this new year that have a surplus of failure in them?? What would the ratio be, you figure, if we were to do the math?? I'll leave that to people who like to crunch numbers but it's safe to say there's a huge discrepancy between the two. I'll bet you money if I were to copy pasta the first couple of pages of games shipped from Gamestop you'll be surprised to see games you have never heard of. Why? Most likely they're garbage. Actually let me just do that real quick.

What the hell is Ninja Reflex?? Never heard of it. Never heard of a lot of these games. The DS sure gets a lot of shit though doesn't it?? If I were to do that to all the specific consoles like the PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii, forget about it. You'll see a lot more of stuff like that. Games that come and go and then their price dwindles, until it's on a bargain bin and you start thinking..Why is this game so cheap ?..or I think for that price I'll give it a chance. Games like Soldier of Fortune, Conan, Beowulf, Frontlines, or any EA Need for Speed race game.

What I'm getting at is that games are serious business. Some companies bet the whole farm, cows and all on a game and yet they just peddle the same thing. I don't get it. I mean, I don't proclaim to be a game developer but if something doesn't work to a degree of a pattern..i.e. games based on movie licenses..why make them? You know they're going to suck, and will probably fail, why not just take that money you had in the beginning and make a quality game, offering a unique experience. Is it that much of a gamble? Versus what... sure mediocrity and lackluster sales from the norm your putting out? There aren't that many blockbusters in video games.

When you reflect back at the end of this year your going to have quite a few Game of the Year nominations of games, that is if they ship the way they're supposed to. But there's always going to be WAY WAY more games that stink to high heaven. Ratio to that..best guess, 6 to one..I think that's being kind. Sure the industry as a whole is seeing huge growth. Those be the big boys. The EA's, Ubisoft's, Activision's and Valve's of the gaming scene. But because of their reliance on the cookie cutter model of past successes they miss the big picture. That being lighting doesn't strike twice in the same place. Create, innovate, don't look to the past, and listen to your consumers. I want , belay that, WE want new games with fresh ideas and unique quality game-play. They don't even have to look gorgeous. Save you some money and give some of it to some talented fresh out of college programmer that can indulge and tickle our fancy and imagination. Inspire a game developer to push the envelope of creativity without worrying about the business bottom line.

Instill in them, and yourselves the very same thing we have..a hunger. A hunger for gaming excellence.

For those who are weird and may actually want to read more of my stuff here are things off the blog I do. Occasionally I wrote for Flixist, a rad movie site where, get this, we talked about and reviewed movies. I have long since stopped writing there ( and here ) as I feel like I've said all I have had cooped up in my head without sounding redundant.
