Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #66 - A New Kind Of Metroid


Featuring Metroid and John Foxx.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

next to Pokemon, Metroid is one of the other few remaining Nintendo series that I have neglected until now, haven't I? Well let's something about this and start right with the very first entry of the series from 1986. When you switch areas in this game, like going from Brinstar to Norfair, you have to go through a dark, featureless room that harbors a looong elevator that sends you down into the depths of Zebes while a spooky electronic sample plays in the background:

From the synth-pop front, I summon John Foxx and his single "A New Kind Of Man" from 1980. It includes a short sample that is also the dominating motif of the song that has a certain resemblance with the sample from Metroid:
