Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #52 - Ban The Sigma

   0

Featuring Mega Man X and Men Without Hats.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

today's topic is the music to the fourth Sigma stage in the original Mega Man X game (1993). This short, vertical stage features an eerie tune consisting entirely of a series of descending notes that provides the emotional setup for the upcoming confrontation with the seemingly immortal Wily expy:

The significant use of synthesizers here and throughout the soundtrack as a whole provides an incentive to have a look at a genre that consists dominantly of such a set-up: 80s Synth Pop. One of the leading groups in that genre, Men Without Hats, provides a short tune called "Ban The Game" (1982) which has a surprisingly similar set of descending notes:

Offending gamers as early as 1982? That's kind of prophetic.
