Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #168 - Hammer Blues Bros.

Featuring Super Mario Bros. 3 and lots of Blues.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

I still have some Mario to spare for this run, so let's dive right into it: A song from Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) that has been remixed several times and can be called a classic of the franchise: The Hammer Bros. battle theme that plays when you have to fight them during what one could consider a random encounter Mario style on the world map:

For several decades, people suspected that the song might have been inspired by the song "Lady Madonna" from the Beatles (1968). And hearing the song one must admit that one can find some likeness in it:

Note: I have to use a link because the every uploader I found keeps blocking this outside youtube.

Nevertheless, as far as I can tell Hammer Bros. is made up of snippets that are pretty common in Bossa/Blues music. For simplicity, I'll just dump all the samples here that I collected for the past years that are comparable to ones found in Hammer Bros.:

Caetano Veloso - Anunciação (1968):

Emmylou Harris - Amarillo (1975):

The second part:

Howling Wolf - Killing Floor (1964):

Third part:

W. C. Handy Memphis Blues (1912):

A little bit of everything:

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Buff's Bar Blues (1972):

Honorable mentions, potpurri:

Charms - Hearts Of Stone (1954):

720 In The Books - Jan Savitt (1939):

Sunday more Final Fantasy!
