Phils Game Music Phindings #19 - Chocobo Tango

   0

Greetings,

todays topic is the Chocobo theme, the main theme of the fluffy yellow bird that, besides Moogles, has become one of the primary mascots of the series. Their theme song, introduced along with its master in Final Fantasy 3 (Famicom), has  appeared in pretty much every entry in the main series and several spin offs.

The music has been remixed by Uematsu himself several times through the games. Some versions include an explicit reference to the style used (Like "Techno de Chocobo from FF6 or "Mambo de Chocobo" from FF5). The version that likely gained the most attention was "Electric Chocobo" from the snowboarding sequence of FF7:

It has been noted several times that this version with its wah-wahs and use of electric piano sounds like a large number of rock songs from the 60s and early 70s. This is because the song is - or is largely inspired by - surfer rock, a genre particularly popular at that time (it also fits well with the snowboarding theme). An example of a song that makes extensive use of this style and is thus often cited is the song "Pipeline" from The Chantays (1963).

However, in the end all of these versions are just remixes of the original chocobo theme from FF3. Can we also find something that also resembles the core melody in some way?

Well, I'll let you decide. In 1959, satirical pianist Tom Lehrer released the album "An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer" which contained a piece of, for the time, charming topical innocence called "The Masochism Tango". I would like you to compare the following note sequence (starts between 0:03 and 0:04) with the sequence starting at 0:24 in the above linked Electric de Chocobo recording:

I wonder if there is a full tango that sounds like the rest of the theme.

Phil
