PS3 Friday Night Fights: Codpressions and Videos Edition

I miss "Blunt Damage"

Black Ops was the first time effort had been put into the Call of Duty series since Modern Warfare. Before that, there were some tweaks made, but World at War and Modern Warfare 2 were the rehashiest things since things could be hashed twice. Of course, the greatest problem wasn't the lack of new things, but the lack of effort devoted to removing bad things, and BLOPS made that effort along with pitching in some goofy ideas.

Black Ops 2 gets a lot right, but phrases like that are never used when there aren't problems. BLOPS2 is less of an all-rifle show, with shotguns and SMGs holding a more effective presence, and most of the ubiquitous perks have been altered so there's less sense of needing them. Unfortunately, with three kinds of mines, and new, obnoxious weapon attachments, other perks have taken their place. It's not all bouncing betties and target finders though. The class system has been changed and everything costs a point. You have ten points. Much like Space Marine, one of my favorites, you can have a fancy gun but lose out on character perks, or be a powered up soldier with a basic gun. You can build for how you want to play to a greater extent than simply one choice from each category.

Things are made available by level and unlocked with tokens, but there are more unlocks than tokens. Until you finish all 10 prestige levels, you can't ever have everything unlocked. You can get most things, and you're free to not bother unlocking scorestreak rewards that you don't feel like using, but the desire to try everything out will have you run out of unlock tokens before you have all the perks and weapons, and you'll undoubtedly find you don't like most of them. You also have to prestige weapons individually, twice, if you want your logo and clan tag set on them. And logo bits require all sorts of challenges to be completed before they can be used. What happened to prestige levels being for showing off? Yeah, the game is ten times as long now, but it's ctrl+C, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V, ctrl+V rather than making anything worthwhile for the time investment. Yes, as tedious as the unnecessarily long example. FYI, Treyarch, people will keep playing games that are well made, even if they aren't progressing toward unlocks. There are also some really questionable balance decisions, specifically with sniper rifles having essentially no recoil, the same load of auto aim as everything else, and one specifically being a single shot to kill anywhere above the legs. Suggesting, programming, testing and approving of this takes a lot of people. I don't want to say that Treyarch is collectively stupid, but how the shit did they think this was good? No one along the way said "hey, isn't a rapid fire, infinite range gun that's as effective as putting a shotgun up someone's nose kind of broken?"

BLOPS2 doesn't shake things up enough to be commended as a whole, nor is it offensive in a way that ruins the fun. With big parties and accessible gameplay, it's good for FNF.

Who am I kidding? You probably already own this if you're going to.

Welcome to the PS3 side of Destructoid's Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the Destructoid community get together online to play games. FNF is an event run by and for the community, so everyone is welcome to join. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that might be required.

If you want to play, we need to know who you are. Leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN ID. You should also send a PSN friend request to the hosts, including a message to say who you are here on Destructoid so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, don't just sit there and whine about it. Anyone can host a game for FNF! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so we can put it on the schedule. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

About PS FNFone of us since 12:46 AM on 09.05.2011

Welcome to the home of PlayStation Friday Night Fights.

Friday Night Fights is a weekly event where we, community members, cooperate with or murder each other online. There is a forum thread for planning and then a blog post here with the final schedule. Keep an eye out for both them if you want to play some games.

If you are new to the whole thing, check this out: FNF FAQ: Everything you need to know (but never asked) about Friday Night Fights

The Guide

To Play

Keep yourself up to date on the schedule. The list in the forums can change several times throughout the week.

Leave a message with your PSN name and which games from the schedule you want to play. More people will play if other people are playing, so speak up.

Send a PSN friend request to the person hosting the game which includes a message with your Dtoid name. If you leave out who you are on the site, they might think you're just a random friend request and ignore you.

To Host

If you want your game listed on the schedule, we need the game, the time, and your PSN ID. We need the specific game, not an abbreviation that applies to more than one; a start time, even if you're playing "all night"; and we need your PSN ID even if you think we know it already.

Don't worry about hosting the same game or hosting a game at the same time as someone else. Instead, think of it like a movie theater; more than one game can run at the same time.

Make sure you have at least an hour to play. That's only two or three matches of the average shooter and those go by pretty quick.

Check the comments, on both the forum post and the cblog when it goes up on Friday, to see if someone has said they'll play. You might have missed their PSN message or your friend list might be full.
