Game Start!

Muppert wearing cap and gown

I made the decision in 2015 to get a degree in IT, several years after highschool. In 2017 I decided to end it there with my undergrad. Honestly, I really loathe being forced to read things that bore me. That was my trouble when I was in highschool. Nothing interested me, so I'd spend schooldays trying to find ways to stay awake. If college was going to be like that, then you can see why I didn't want to go in the first place. I can say with certainty that the current way of learning is still not for me.

So where am I going with that? Well, I also had another revelation. I don't like doing work that doesn't interest me. I was fortunate enough after graduating to get employed as an entry level developer in my state. It's been only three days, but I can safely say that the same issue I had with learning also applies to my work. While I do love thinking of useful ways to use software, being told to do stuff I don't want to is just not for me.

So, what is for me? What do I enjoy?

Playing this - I felt like a kid again

Videogames have been a part of some of my earliest moments as a child. I remember bugging my uncle to play Commando on the NES. He would pull the ol' give-him-a-controller-but-don't-plug-it-in trick to keep me quiet. I was lucky enough to have a mom who would buy me games as a kid, even when money was tight. She didn't have to, but she wanted me to be happy. Thanks mom!

I didn't have much time for games while working and going to school, but I still bought some games to have at the ready when I would ultimately go back. I'd see everyone on Destructoid post updates on their latest adventures of Bloodborne, Super Mario 3D World, Zelda and couldn't wait for some time off to binge on some videogames.

So what's the point of all this then?

Well, I've reached a point in my life where I realize I only want to do things that make me happy. We as a society are at a point in life where anyone can make anything or do anything because of the tools available on the internet. You can become a web developer, video content creator, writer, a singer, whatever! All with the help of the internet.

Fireworks in Rio de Janiero
 Fireworks! Yay!

With all that in mind, what better way to start off 2018 than to put in motion the development of my own game. I want to keep doing short updates on the game, this way it'll keep me focused and help keep me (somewhat) responsible...hopefully. It'll focus less on the technical process and more so on my ideas and snippets of the game, and what's going on in my head at the time. Because honestly there a million and one tutorials of which engines to use, where to start, and all that - so I'd rather give a more unique perspective of my journey. start to finish.

I want to make this a monthly thing, at the very least, but maybe there'll be more sprinkled throughout. Not sure yet. Honestly I don't have anything set in stone about the game either. But that's part of the process! And it'll definitely be in my next blog - hopefully I'll have decided by then. I am very, very, super-duper excited about this. Whatever I make may not be a big hit, but at least I'll love doing it.
