Around two weeks ago, I got Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite. I like the gameplay, I like the active tags, I like the new combos to discover, but everytime I see some of the terrible textures at play (like Captain America), I just groan. My opinion aligns with Max from Yo! Videogames! in that playing the game is enjoyable, but everything else is just so bad.
Last week I bought Cuphead, and once again the universe juxtaposes weird things for me to think about. Cuphead is no doubt an enjoyable game, with bullet pattern recognition and difficult but enjoyable fights. But the aesthetic is amazing and pushes it to the next level. The incredible attention to detail to recreating a classic 1930s cartoon.
Two different games which have proven over their short lifespans that the gameplay is in fact fun, but very different amount of polish and visual presentation. I feel virtually nothing before a match starts in MvCi as the announcer goes, "Ready? Fight!" But before a boss fight in Cuphead the announcer may shout out, "THIS MATCH IS ABOUT TO GET RED HOT! FIGHT!" as the screen flashes WALLOP! to really get you pumped to... die most likely but I'm doing pretty good at Cuphead personally.
Are there examples of games with terrible graphics and presentation that you've gotten past? And what are some of your favorite graphic aesthetics? I mean, anything Vanillaware gives me is incredibly strong visually, and Okami HD is the most unnecessary upgrade in fidelity ever due to how striking the brush strokes it uses.
Leave a comment below about some of your thoughts on visual presentation in games, your favorites and least favorite ones, and maybe you'll see your comments on the front page this weekned!
