While the SNES was a constant presence in my childhood, I never had a large collection of games for it. In fact, many of the games I played I still don't know the names of. It wasn't until I say the uproar over Breath of Fire 6 that I knew I played Breath of Fire 1 in the SNES.
After reading the excellent top 100 SNES games list by IGN:
I decided to go back and play those 100 games and review them. Well, as I looked closer at the list, I realized that there are many genres that did not age well from the SNES (racing, sports) and many other genres that I am simply not good at (shmups, arcade shooters) and others that I need other players to play against for an accurate representation (fighters). Also, I played many of the more well known games such as Final Fantasy and Super Metroid.
Hence, this won't be a comprehensive review of the complete review of the whole IGN list.
This was the intro I used in a some forum where I first started this project 3 years ago. Due to real life, I had to abandon it. However, I am coming back now, and will be posting my earlier reviews here.
These reviews were my earliest review writings, and I am actually a little embarrassed with them. Especially with the overuse of the forum's sometimes lame meme's.
Here are a number of extra rules for Destructoid:
-If you have any suggestion of a game that is not in the IGN list that I should review, please suggest it.
-Make a bet on each game to check whether Chris Charter played it or nor.
Here is my first review of the list
Here is my final call on the game. I would go into a special from 50 score based on five criteria.
The Fun Factor:
This game playes like the original Prince of Persia games.
I would not describe Blackthorne as a fun game, while the gameplay mechanic is a solid for a 5 level Prince of Persia game, doing the same thing for 16 levels is not that fun.
The most difficult thing about Blackthorn is handling the controls. While the battles are tense and hard to get out of without a scathe, potions are plenty. The number one cause of death will be mistimed jumps.
Some level are really difficult though, and the reason for that was the lack of potions which looked like an oversight to me.
A couple epically challenging sequences lets this game get a:
Score: 7 Style:
This is one part where Blackthorne delivers in spades, from the bad-ass Blackthorne with his epic shotgun to the trolls who laugh every time they get a shoot at you. The presentation of Tuul (the planet where the game takes place) presented us a grimdark world before grimdark became the mainstream.
You can also shoot your allies and use them as human shields. The hero is a bad-ass and an asshole.
If the music was better I would have given this a 10, but the music makes this only deserving of an:
Score: 8 Playability: I am awfully used to Call of Duty, can I really play this game?
The graphics are not horrible and will not deter anything from the experience. The sound will not make your ears bleed. And while you are not enjoying HD graphics, the WII does not have HD graphics and still beats both those systems ass.
What affects the playability is the controls though. For a game that requires pin point jumps and some fast movement; the jumps take a second to register and the main character walks like there is a stick up his ass. You feel that walking is painful to him. The battle commands are responsive though, which will make the frequent plunge to your doom more frequent than death by the occasional troll.
Lord Spencer's Score:
The bad ass hero made me want to finish the game, and while I cursed many times after a whole level was replayed at the end because of a stupid fall, I always came back. Until the last three level where I just wanted the game to end. The epic boss fight was a nice way to end it. If you liked Prince of Persia then you should defiantly play this game.Score: 6 Overall: 5/7/8/3/6: 29/50
According to IGN this is going to be the lowest game in the list that I am going to play. And it was a good game to play, but I can't say that I would play it again.
Tips on the game: (don't look If you don't want any spoilers)
1- Enter every room gun tooting.
2- Everything you get, save, nothing is wasted.
3- Only bombs kill the whip troll.
4- Changing rooms might give a window to shoot.
5- Golems are weak, don't let them hurt you.
6- If you get messed up at the beginning of the level just retry.
7- Roll behind trolls to get a free shot.
8- Watch out for trap triggers in the ground.
9- You can jump over spider mines.
10- Wasps are only to destroy generators.
11- DO NOT FORGET TO GET THE BRIDGE KEY EVERYTIME YOU DON"T NEED TO USE IT.
My next game was supposed to be Sunset riders, but sorry, I cannot dodge bullets, logs, and more bullets, all the while riding a damn horse and shooting at the bad guys in a frakking keyboard.
It is like a western Contra, pretty good from what I saw.
My next game will be therefore #79 in the Ign list, Flashback.
