There’s something really special about playing video games with people that you actually know in the waking world. People that aren’t just usernames that you happen upon randomly.
The Playstation 4 has some really wonderful experiences, but most of them tend to cater towards offline single-player adventures. If you don’t care for first person shooters or sports games, the pickings are really fucking slim! Helldivers was absolute bliss, but it’s not exactly something that’s easy to pick up for newcomers. It’s built on a foundation of tight teamwork and coordination that doesn’t leave much room for fucking around! Needless to say, my friends weren’t super thrilled about it…..
Many attempts were made to wrangle a group together, but things just never really panned out.
That is, of course, until the Nintendo Switch entered the picture.
The system is practically begging to be shared with other people! I’ll never forget the first time I sat down outside on the porch and played Snipperclips with one of my roommates! At that moment, it really fucking hit me! You can play this thing anytime, anywhere, and (because of the flexible nature of the joy-cons) you always have two remotes!
The potential was there, but there weren’t yet any games that fully fulfilled it. Then Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released last month…
This game singe-handedly revitalized my drive to play games with friends! Even when you’re losing, it’s still an absolute blast to play! The controls are incredibly simple, so pretty much anyone can pick it up and have a ton of fun!
For the first time in years, my roommates were actually knocking on my door and begging to play some video games! My coworkers were texting me at all hours of the night (talking mad shit….), and challenging me to get in on some of that delicious multiplayer action!
Hell, even on Destructoid I’m constantly being invited to hop online and play a few races!
It’s a really good feeling! After years of playing mostly solitary adventures, FINALLY, I’m starting to play games with my friends again!!!
This may just be one game, but it bodes extremely well for things to come on the system! Is the Nintendo Switch the perfect gaming machine? No. Absolutely not. However, if Nintendo can keep delivering on these kinds of multiplayer-friendly experiences, I foresee a whole lot more dust gathering on my Playstation 4 in the future.
