2012: Wii U, the World Ends with U

My favourite gaming moment from the last year was when I started playing the Wii U.
The system a lot of us didn't understand at E3 and one many still don't. Though what I understand now is that the Wii U is meant to be a system that is truly for everyone.

I know the commercial is bad, but I'm not going to stage my own family...

Group Play Beyond Just Party Games

The Wii U with its gamepad can start moving group game experiences beyond just party games. By this I am referring to games like Buzz!, the Rabbids series, and others that most would consider Shovelware.

Case and point, I was able to play New Super Mario Bros. U with my Mother whom has never played games aside from some tablet stuff on iPad. She was right at home using the gamepad to help my fiancée and I through levels.

The Wii gave motion to the motionless. Anyone could play because all they had to do was move. The Wii U now gives the potential to bring more types of players into a more complex game experience.

Kinda like this, but not stupid.

Big Screen DS

I have been playing with different iterations of the Nintendo DS/3DS since its/their inception(s). Regardless of what console I had or console game I was playing I was always actively playing some DS game.

The Wii U may be a console, but the two screen style is nothing new to Nintendo or to anyone who has played DS. The main difference being the size and distance between the screens.

When I picked up ZombiU I felt right at home with the gameplay. Inventory and map on the gamepad (bottom) screen, check. Watch my ass for danger on the TV (top) screen, check. That natural feeling really made me wonder why so few reviewers refer to this similarity.

When I first understood that the Wii U concept I fully expected Nintendo to announce the ability to play some DS games on the big screen. May never happen, but I could care less. The Wii U provides the DS-experience that I have enjoyed for years on the big screen.

It's like she let one go and it's killing the dude behind her

Holy $%*! Miiverse

I would be the first to tell you that I am not really a social media guy.

If I find my way on Facebook, I can spend hours making myself depressed and incurring much self-hate. I have had 2 abandoned blogs. 1 abandoned twitter, and 1 that I purely update from Flipbook on iPad whenever I read something relevant to my interests. I don't get Google+, and talking on instant messenger usually doesn't get farther then "how's the weather?".

The Miiverse though. I am not sure what it is about it. I can get kind of excited to go on and see what people are saying. I respond to questions when I can help or have input. I actually post which is unreal for me, and actually want to see if their is a response to what I say.

I think it may be due to the fact that the Miiverse is the internet with out having most of the internet. It is almost like a forum with a $300 barrier-to-entry. I am not sure anyone would buy a Wii U simply to troll on the Miiverse, so immediately you have "members" that want to talk about the console and the games they enjoy. No Godwin's Law here.

Fact: this picture pops up when you search 80's kid, but is named "stereotypical90s".

Before you draw conclusions about what kind of gamer I am, probably too late, here is what I play.

I have played games since I was 5. First memorable game was Super Metroid. I have played the gambit on all the systems, from Panzer Dragoon to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I play games not for any specific style, but for specific feelings. I will not play what I do not get a feeling of joy, awe, or accomplishment from. At the moment I have put down Wii U games since the release of Planetside 2, which is so much better and accessible for different play styles then the first.

Anyway, let me know what you think in the comments. Have you gotten the Wii U? What has your experience been like?
