Exber's 2020 Gaming First Quarter Report

   0

In my previous blog I wrote that I would be writing over here some retro reviews of games that I played, and while the idea is still happening I wanted to bring those reviews and upcoming gaming-related content with some background beforehand. That said, to write about how my first quarter had been seemed just the right thing to write this time around.

I already posted about this over in my social media accounts, but nothing is compared to when such rich content is shared via writing, so let's begin. I have been following a gaming challenge since 2014 when I aimed to beat a certain amount of games per year and since then 2014 granted me the opportunity to beat 40 games, and as for the following years, the list follows:

  • 2015: 50
  • 2016: 66
  • 2017: 48
  • 2018: 46
  • 2019: 37

As you can see, 2016 proved to be the year with most games beaten, but ever since that accomplishment, to reach that number or to even dream about it has been clouded by real-life duties. In 2017, for example, I began my internships, graduated from college and got a job, so this year I gave this challenge a lot of thought to balance it more with my life and stuff and came up with the idea to just divide the year into its four quarters and beat 15 games per quarter, that would give me time to do other things. If I manage to do that, 2020 would be seeing me beating 60 games, and as I am writing this, I have beaten 21.

Ok, enough background. Here are the fifteen games I managed to beat from January to March of the present year:

  1. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker - 4.5/5*
  2. Minecraft - 3.5/5
  3. Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops - 3/5
  4. Florence - 4.5/5
  5. Shovel Knight: King of Cards - 4.5/5
  6. Dead Nation - 4/5
  7. Castle Crashers - 3.5/5
  8. Persona 3 Portable - 4/5*
  9. Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - 4/5
  10. Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows - 3/5
  11. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy - 4.5/5*
  12. Ivy the Kiwi? - 3.5/5
  13. Okamiden - 4.5/5
  14. Dissidia Final Fantasy - 4/5
  15. Theatrhytm Final Fantasy - 3/5

*games in bold were my favorites during the quarter they belong to, and that automatically nominates them for Best Game of my Retro GOTY Awards

Also, my favorite games per quarter are not only auto nominated but get to be reviewed, too. However, this rule may change a little if a game I get to play resonates with me in more ways than one making them worthy of being reviewed, whether a good or bad experience it may have been. I am playing Final Fantasy VIII for this second quarter and believe me, that game is going to be reviewed.

Having said that, by writing this today I already have three retro reviews to write next, starting with Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker (The thought of writing a review of such amazing game makes me happy).

During April and due to the social distancing and stuff, beating games has been easier to do in terms of time, thus I may have to either beat those 15 games and find something else to do or find something else to do while I beat the games. I have so much free time in my hands now that I don't know what to do exactly sometimes, and this lockdown in my country seems to be lasting for thirty days or more so, guess time will tell.

Next time in Exber's blog: Retro Review - Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

Thanks for reading.

- As expected, video games made this possible.

About Exberone of us since 7:47 PM on 04.07.2020

I guess these would be considered as my stats, so here I go:

I'm Exber, not related to my name by any means. I'm from Venezuela and I'm an English Teacher.

I have been playing video games since I was 4 years old. Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64 are among my first gaming memories.

Console gamer. I play on PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, 3DS, DS, and many retro systems. However, PC is not out of the picture.

Resident Evil and Persona share the spot as my favorite gaming series. Following this, here are my favorite games per year:

2006: The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time

2007: Resident Evil 2

2008: Persona 4
Runner Up: Resident Evil 4

2010: Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater
Runner Up: Final Fantasy XII

2011: Radiant Historia
Runner Up: Okami

2012: Klonoa Door to Phantomile
Runner Up: Tomb Raider Anniversary

2013: Fatal Frame 3 The Tormented
Runner Up: Silent Hill 4

2014: Onimusha Dawn of Dreams
Runner Up: Resident Evil Zero

2015: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
Runner Up: Final Fantasy IV

2016: Final Fantasy IX
Runner Up: A Link Between World

2017: Persona 5
Runner Up: Brothers A Tale of Two Sons

2018: Skies of Arcadia Legends
Runner Up: Zelda Spirit Tracks

2019: Persona Q2 New Cinema Labyrinth
Runner Up: Ghost Trick

I try to learn the most I can with every video game, thus my Retro GOTY winners won a place in me. Best examples are Persona 4 (2008) and Final Fantasy IX (2016)

GameSpot and GameInformer were the sites that granted me the opportunity to blog prior to coming here. Good times.

I'm currently 26 years old. Come May 10th and I'll level up.

Favorite color: green.

Favorite number: 4.

Favorite video game genre: Survival Horror. RPGs come second.

Favorite movie: 13 going to 30.

Favorite game of all time: Persona 4.

And, that's about it for now.
